The Rebirth of Prodigy Classic Role-Playing
I'll start at the beginning. In nineteen hundred ninety-four I began my career on the prodigy classic service, then simply known as prodigy.
Before then, I had role-played very little on the dreaded AOL, which I found heart wrenchingly bestial in its form. Like most of us, I also partook
In my early years that of D&D, and even a freeform BBS chat system, which was briefly the home of my own system.
The first room I ever entered on prodigy, (henceforth referred to simply as p*) was the vampires rping room, held under the supernatural realm.
I remember this beginning at least for me was comprised solely of long, long, hours in these rooms.doing nothing, but simply chilling.very
Fresh-like with other such ungodly oddities that made me feel welcome.
To define a role-player is not an easy task. Partly because by and by, we differ from each other in simply amazing ways. And partly due to the
Tastes a certain cliché of role-players may hold true. To make things short I'd say a role-player, is any sentient being who either willing or not
Takes on the role of another persona.
Websters defines role-play in this simple sense: to play a role. And later on as: 1. A deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder
And usually excluding such states as mental deficiency, psychoneurosis, and various character disorders. 2. Such undsoundness of mind or lack of
Understanding as prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction
Or as removes one from criminal or civil responsibility. 3. Extreme folly or unreasonableness. b. Something utterly foolish or unreasonable.
And finally goes on to describe role-playing in its fullest extent:
A psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life,
And by disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought, and conduct - called also dementia praecox
That being said, I believe we can continue.
Soon after the first three or so months of wasting away deep in the soft white underbelly of p* with such names as first generation role-player
Msmystique and other undesirables who really don't deserve mentioning. I left. Moved to Houston, where I stayed for the next six months.
When I returned, the prodigy supernatural area had exploded with pure raw talent, and after week or two I fell in with a few who had come to
Stay, and dominate. Viper and Arthur. If you were around then, you know exactly what I'm talking about; if you were not then there is no way
Describe what followed.
Months came and went, years came and went and we remained, and prodigy grew around us. It came to be known in time that p* was the home
Free-form role-playing on the net. They flocked from CompuServe and AOL, from BBS and email systems, flocked and collided, AD&D with Rifts, palladium
With Whitewolf, each system spoke against the others book characters from well-known novels showed up, supposed gods with immeasurable power
Fought even more supposed gods, the old ones tried there best to keep the supernatural realm in check, it was easy enough to lay a smack down on
Someone who believed the more power he had given himself, the easier it is to role-play.
Odd layers formed then, the old ones stayed above of course but people separated into acceptable rping rungs. Where life and death meant nothing, continuity
Was unheard of, and death a mere long lost idea.
Without going into detail the lack of a recognized base set of guidelines brought the downfall of prodigy classic. In the end prodigy was exactly what it
Had always been a home for every shape and idea that any of the worlds wanted to take on. It was the growing number of people under lawless rule that had
Been placed in there own hands that ended prodigy long before y2k, and the shutdown of that service.
There are a few that had endured to the very end, these that had never given up and never will. These that in time will bring forth the total revolution of
Internet role-play. We have begun on irc. A place we all despise if for no other reason than its obvious ugly appearance, but a place where we can be together
Once more.
Brought to you by your founders and a few of the oldest role-players to step out of prodigy. Viper & Detus now bring you back to an idea that cannot be bound
By time or place. This is the rebirth
